Dumfries Blues 27-23 Kirkcudbright Netball Club

Dumfries Blues won a tight match against Kirkcudbright 27-23. Blues have been on an enforced competitive break and are preparing for the new season starting in the new year with a programme of friendlies. Kirkcudbright Netball Club were welcome guests and played their part in a close game where the Blues eventually cam out as victors.

The first quarter saw Kirkcudbright come out of the blocks very fast, when Blues missed their chance to take the first goal, Kirkcudbright took possession of the ball and score the opening goal, which they also followed up from their own centre pass. Dumfries play was at times hectic with many passes and catches going astray, the opposite was happening for Kirkcudbright as they continued to work good ball to their shooting pair, who were scoring at ease. Kirkcudbright were up 8-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Dumfries Blues made some changes, and whilst this had an impact for the Blues in scoring more goals, Kirkcudbright were still able to convert in the shooting circle. There was evidence of set plays and court movement improvements throughout the quarter which Dumfries won 9-8, but Kirkcudbright were still leading going into the second half with the scores at 16 Kirkcudbright and 14 to Dumfries.

The third quarter saw both teams tightening up their defence and loose balls into the shooting circle meant plenty of turnover ball for both teams. Shots were at a premium, and both teams only managed 4 goals a piece. Kirkcudbright were still leading 20-18, going into the final quarter. A change of tactics for Dumfries in defending, with play focussed on keeping the shooters out of the circle, began to provide benefits for the Blues defence. There were fewer chances for Kirkcudbright to get good ball under the posts and they were having to shoot from an unfamiliar distance. Turnovers started to happen along with the shooters finding their game in front of goal. Dumfries were able to push on for victory and closing minutes wining the quarter 9-3 along with the match 27-23.

Molly Kitson and Holly Wybergh made their debuts for the Blues and acquitted themselves very well throughout the match.
