Dumfries Blues travelled to Carlisle for the final match of the league season against Harraby Shooting Stars for winner takes all match in respect of promotion to Division One. A game where Dumfries came out on top in the tightest of scorelines.
As is usually the case crunch matches, the teams were feeling each other out in the opening exchanges and the score was 4-4 early on. Harraby started to grow into the game and were applying excellent defensive pressure.
The Blues were fighting hard and when the ball arrived in the shooters hands they were rarely missing but the flow wasn’t as constant as the expected. At the end of the opening quarter Harraby had moved into a 11-9 lead.
A lightning quick start to the second quarter saw Dumfries take advantage of Harraby errors and fully punish turnovers. This was Dumfries' best quarter of the match and they put on 9 goals to open up a comfortable lead 18 - 13 at half time.
Early composure from the team was keeping the opposition at arm’s length and although the basic errors were continuing to grow, the lead remained intact. Much like the first quarter Dumfries started to wobble midway through and Harraby scented blood. Attack after attack reigned in on the Blues circle, Harraby had their tails up.
The ball was failing to stick in Dumfries hands and turnovers were being exquisitely punished by Harraby as they drew to within one, 23-22 at the end of the third quarter. It as a simple equation for the Dumfries team, goal for goal with the Harraby in one quarter and they seal the win. The opening few minutes went with the script and the coaches on the sidelines were a mix of hope, belief and tension.
