Dumfries Blues Netball Club started their league campaign for the 2014 season with a win at the Harraby arena in Carlisle. The Blues who handed two debuts to juniors stepping up into the Senior team, Georgia Marshall (GK) and Kayleigh Proudfoot (GS), started well scoring the opening 3 goals of the game. The defence restricted the opposition to few goal scoring opportunities and were in charge of the fixture by the end of the first quarter leading 7 v 1. There were no changes to the team for the second quarter as the Blues looked to build on their dominance early on. Excellent defensive work by Georgia Marshall (GK), Emma Pool (GD) and Alison Groat (WD) ensured turnover of possession allowing the attacking players to move the ball fluently in to the opposition circle. The Blues extended their lead in the second quarter finishing at half time 15 v 6 in the lead. The line-up was changed for the second half, with Kayleigh Proudfoot (GS) making her debut, teamed up with Bethany Hutton (GA). Paula Craven (C) remained in control of the centre court with Karen Reed (WA) providing the feed for the score board to continue to tick over in the Blues favour. At the end of the third quarter Blues were comfortably in the lead with the scores at 23 v 9. The final quarter was an opportunity to try out set moves in the attacking circle from the previous weeks training, and this was having a significant impact as the shooters found space and time to secure the victory with a mixture of close shots and an exquisite long shot from Bethany Hutton. The final whistle came and Dumfries were winners 33 v 13. This was an excellent start to the season, Alison Groat (WD) was named player of the match. Blues are back in league action on the 4th March, when they take on Meerkats from Carlisle.
